Hades, God of the Underworld, desperately needs Xena and Gabrielle's help. King Sisyphus of Corinth is always trying to cheat death; this time he has abducted Hades' sister Celesta and seized her eternal flame. Hades explains that if the eternal flame goes out, mankind will be unable to die, and in fact, the effects of Celesta's imprisonment have already begun. Emboldened by their new immortality, a band of thugs led by Toxeus begin terrorizing the region. Xena and Gabrielle must overcome the thugs while searching for Celesta, unaware that if either of them touches the goddess, they will die. They meet Talus, a talented young healer, who helps them find their way into Sisyphus' castle. With the help of Queen Karas, they force Sisyphus to confront his fate, but it turns out that Talus, who has been ill for some time, is the one Celesta has come to escort to the Underworld.
